CANARIES

Should I become housebound
I will have canaries in an
old fashioned cage
near my favorite chair.
They’ll sing in the mornings
and lift my heart and
I will just sit and enjoy
their live music, rain or shine.
They’ll fuss at each other
(as I have fussed at
whomever I’ve lived with)
then jump onto their perches
to sing again.
Busy breathing companions
whose seeds and feathers fall to the floor,
so I will have to sweep up every day.

Much can be forgotten and much learned
living with such joy,
tending innocence.

Oh I like this! The poem you gave me this afternoon is touching. I specially love the lines near the end, where "away" and "his way" echo each other, and that last poignant, "We can go home," that says so much.
