HOWL OF A MOTHER

The day has come and is leaving fast, but we now know Geoff's sentence. This day has been postponed 2 months, but over 15 of us gathered in the courtroom, supporting my handsome son in a baby blue shirt and a grey jacket and pants. His first time wearing a suit.

I confess, at the encouragement of my daughter, I took atavan to take a step back from the intensity of the afternoon. I'm glad I did. It's worn off now, and I'm ready to sleep, but not without letting you know his sentence.
a. Return to Teen Challenge by 6 pm tomorrow evening.
b. Complete the TC Program by the first week of May.
c. Return to Missoula, check in to the Ravalli County or Missoula County Detention facility to await a bed opening in a 6-month pre-release program, which could be at any of 7 centers in Montana.
d. Successfuly complete the pre-release program (get a job, go to classes, attend AA) within 6 months.
e. Do everything your probation officer says for the next 20 years. BUT, hopefully return to the community in November, 2011.
f. Earn and pay back $39,000 in resitution with an open ended possibility of more medical expenses as time goes on.

This is the long run, folks. I'm set on the far far shore to see him complete his obligations and return to the community. I cannot imagine his despair this evening to know what hoops remain. Thankfully his dear partner is with him (and his hiccups) in the bus behind the house. May they nurture each other's hearts for the long haul.

He is strong, he's been clear, and generally he's on top of his wave. He'll continue to work his heart out for Teen Challenge, and do his best at the Pre-Release. Then perhaps he'll be free to come home and start his own life once again.
